The target temperature (S) is the temperature that must be reached and maintained during each step of the firing program. It is set on the program controller as “S” or “SETPOINT.” The target temperature for each step varies depending on the purpose of the firing (fusing, tack fusing, slumping, slow cooling, or homogenization). Using the basic program template as a starting point, adjust the settings to suit the characteristics of the piece and the materials used.

When setting the target temperature, it is important to understand the relationship between the program controller’s control accuracy and the actual temperature inside the kiln. Even at the same set temperature, the actual temperature experienced by the pieces will vary depending on the kiln type, size, thermocouple location, and arrangement of the pieces. By recording trends with a data logger and comparing the set values with the actual measured values, you can identify the furnace’s unique “temperature characteristics” and set precise target temperatures accordingly.
