The Stick Fusing Zone is the temperature range between 680 and 710°C, where the glass surface melts slightly, causing the pieces to bond together, but the edges and corners remain largely intact as the glass “sticks” together (§8.2). In the viscosity range, this corresponds to log η of 9–10 (Pa·s), where the glass flows only at the surface while maintaining its three-dimensional shape. This is a temperature range newly established by Rei Chikaoka (2021) as “Stick Fusing,” one of five classifications of fusing techniques (there is no separate entry for this in the 2012 publication).
The practical significance of the stick fusing range lies in the fact that bonding occurs at the lowest temperature, thereby minimizing color changes and shape distortion. It is used for temporary bonding applications, such as attaching three-dimensional decorative parts to a base glass, as well as for securing small components. However, since this temperature range also lies directly above the risk zone for loss of transparency (660–680°C), it is crucial to design the heating rate so that the process passes through this zone rapidly while maintaining the peak temperature. As it is close to the boundary with the “bubble squeeze” zone, the setting of the dwell time is critical to ensuring quality.
