ramp time (T)

The time required to reach the target temperature. In controllers, this is denoted by T. Some furnaces specify this in terms of time rather than rate.

Ramp time (T) is the time it takes to ramp up (or down) from the current temperature to the next target temperature during each step of the firing program. In the program controller, this is set as the “T” or “RAMP” parameter. The shorter the ramp time, the faster the heating rate (resulting in a rapid temperature change); the longer the ramp time, the more gradual the temperature change.

The heating rate must be carefully determined based on the piece’s size, thickness, and type of glass. While relatively rapid heating is possible for thin pieces (3–6 mm), gradual heating is necessary for thick pieces, large pieces, or when using a slump mold to prevent a temperature difference between the surface and the interior. Rapid heating can cause thermal cracking. When setting conditions for the first time, it is safest to start with a gradual (longer) heating time and gradually shorten it if no problems arise.
