A Field Notebook (Kiln Log) is a production log in which the materials used, dimensions, firing program, results, failure modes, and polarizing plate measurements are recorded for each firing (treatise §17). Chikaoka (2012, p. 106) proposed this recording practice as a “Planning Checklist,” and in this paper as well, each firing is treated as an “experiment with a sample size of 1,” positioning the record as the smallest unit for theoretical verification. The idea is that a single line of text—such as “Full fusing at 780°C for 15 minutes; result: appropriate”—serves as verification data for both viscosity-zone mapping and the plate-sag formula.
Minimum Set of Recorded Items (Treatise §17.2): Preliminary planning (ideas, production drawings); materials (glass part numbers and lots, plaster mix); firing parameters (dimensions, layout, all stages of the profile, kiln name, shelf placement); results (photographs, degree of deformation, failure modes); and polarizer measurement values (retardation in nm/cm). The fusing-notebook (browser app) allows you to digitally record this information and search past firings. Artists who do not keep records are prone to repeating the same mistakes and run the risk of being unable to reproduce successful programs. On the other hand, since overly detailed records can be difficult to maintain, it is important to prioritize the habit of recording only the minimum required items each time.
