Cadmium selenium (CdSe/CdS) is a colorant that imparts vivid red, orange, and yellow hues to glass. Compounds of cadmium and selenium are used particularly in deep red (selenium ruby), orange, and yellow glass. These colorants have low stability at high temperatures and are a prime example of “color burnout,” a phenomenon where the color is lost due to excessive high-temperature firing.
When firing cadmium-selenium glass, it is of the utmost importance to strictly adhere to the maximum temperature recommended by the manufacturer. Even a temperature 50°C higher than the guideline can cause significant color changes. Additionally, since cadmium is a hazardous substance, appropriate protective gear (mask and gloves) is required when grinding, crushing, or pulverizing the glass. Since reaction lines may appear when firing this glass adjacent to other materials, testing is recommended.
