Stick Fusing

Stick fusing is a technique in which glass is heated to a relatively low temperature of 680–710°C, and pieces of glass are joined while their surfaces are slightly molten. This corresponds to a viscosity range of log η 9–10, and the glass "stick" together while their edges and corners remain largely intact. This term was newly established by Rei Chikaoka (2021) as one of five categories in her classification of fusing techniques (it was not listed as a separate entry in the 2012 publication).

Since stick fusing is performed at the lowest temperature, color changes and shape distortion are kept to a minimum. It is used for bonding three-dimensional decorative parts to a base glass or for temporary bonding to secure small components. It is performed at an even lower temperature than tack fusing (700–740°C) and offers superior dimensional stability. However, the bond strength is lower than that of other fusing methods, so care must be taken to avoid impact.
