Needling is a type of opacity in which needle-like wrinkles or streaks appear on the surface of glass. When the glass remains at high temperatures for an extended period, crystals form on the surface, creating fine streaks that diminish its luster.
This can be prevented by rapidly passing the material through the decomposition range (approximately 600–750°C).
