A metal colloid is a state in which metals such as gold, silver, and copper are dispersed in glass as nanometer-sized particles rather than in atomic form. Through surface plasmon resonance, they absorb specific wavelengths of light, producing vivid colors such as golden red, copper red, and silvery yellow.

The particle size determines the wavelength at which the glass emits color, and the particle size is controlled by the reheating temperature and time. This is the mechanism behind the color emission of Striker glass.
