Lead-bearing glass is glass that contains lead (PbO). It has a high refractive index and is heavy; because its viscosity curve shifts toward lower temperatures, it is well-suited for casting and flow molding. It exhibits colors ranging from pink to purple.
It tends to react and discolor when it comes into contact with sulfur- or selenium-based glasses or silver. When fired in refractory plaster containing sulfates, PbS precipitates and causes blackening; therefore, it is necessary to use lead-free plaster or limit the maximum firing temperature.
