The initial heating rate is the rate at which the temperature rises from room temperature to around 500°C. Since thermal shock cracking is likely to occur in this temperature range, the heating rate should be set to be slower for thicker and larger items.
According to the Adams-Williamson rule, the speed must be reduced in inverse proportion to the square of the thickness.
