Hold time (H) refers to the duration during which the target temperature is maintained after it is reached in each step of a firing program. The hold time varies significantly depending on the purpose of the step, such as the hold during fusing (to ensure temperature uniformity and complete melting) or the hold during slow cooling (to relieve residual stress). On the program controller, this is set as the “H” or “HOLD” parameter.

The hold time setting affects the quality of your work. If the hold time at the maximum fusing temperature is too short, the glass will not fuse together completely. If the hold time during slow cooling is too short, residual stress will remain, causing delayed cracking. Adjust the hold time according to the thickness and complexity of your piece, and be sure to set the slow-cooling hold time conservatively (on the longer side). It is also important to use a data logger to verify the actual temperature stability during the holding period.
