η-T-t Framework

The η-T-t framework (a framework based on viscosity η, temperature T, and time t) is a conceptual framework that provides a unified view of glass kiln firing within a “three-dimensional space of viscosity, temperature, and time.” It uses a single framework to interpret how viscosity decreases as temperature rises and how the degree to which the glass softens changes over time. This framework allows for a unified understanding of all techniques, from fusing to pot melt and casting.

The firing program is visualized as a trajectory on the (T, t) plane, and by overlaying it with a horizontal band of log η, it becomes possible to visualize “which viscosity regions are traversed.” In each viscosity region, different phenomena (cracking, color, shape, and structural changes) become dominant, allowing the characteristics of each technique to be interpreted within this framework. The η-T-t framework serves as the methodological foundation for “Artist-Generated Theory,” which connects both practical data (artists’ production notes) and scientific literature (peer-reviewed papers and engineering texts) along the vertical axis.
