Crystallization is the phenomenon in which amorphous (non-crystalline) glass transforms, through the application of heat, into a crystalline structure in which atoms and molecules are arranged in an orderly manner. In the context of glass fusing, this is often a problem known as devitrification, which causes cosmetic defects such as a white, cloudy surface or unevenness.

Crystallization is the second stage that follows nucleation. Crystals grow rapidly at a higher temperature than the nucleation zone (the crystal growth zone). To prevent devitrification, it is important to pass through this temperature range quickly, ensure that the surface is free of contaminants (grease and dirt promote crystallization), and minimize the number of firings.
