Copper-bearing glass is a type of glass that uses copper as a coloring agent. In the oxidized state, Cu²⁺ gives the glass a blue-to-green color; as reduction progresses, Cu⁺ causes it to become colorless; and as reduction continues further, it forms a colloidal Cu⁰ solution, resulting in a copper red (or gold red) color.
A key characteristic of this glass is that its color changes significantly depending on the redox conditions inside the kiln. It also reacts with sulfur- and selenium-based glasses, reactive glasses, and silver.
