A color sample tile is a small test piece created to verify the actual color, transparency, and texture of each type of glass after firing. Even with the same type of glass, its appearance can vary depending on the firing temperature, holding time, number of layers, and combination with other glasses; therefore, creating a color sample before beginning the actual production helps prevent unexpected color changes.
It is important to create color samples under exactly the same conditions as the actual production (the combination of glass used, the number of layers stacked, and the firing program). Examine the samples under both transmitted light (viewing them against a light source) and reflected light (normal viewing conditions) to determine in advance how they will appear in their actual environment. Recording the production date, firing conditions, and glass part numbers on the samples will serve as a useful reference later on.
