Chromium is a metal oxide that imparts green hues to glass. It is added as chromium oxide (Cr₂O₃) and produces a wide range of green hues, from emerald green to yellow-green. The hue varies depending on the amount added, firing temperature, and atmosphere; at high temperatures, the color may change or be lost (color burnout).
When chromium coexists with copper or other metal oxides, unexpected color changes may occur. In particular, placing it next to copper-bearing glass can trigger a unique reaction.
